Moe’s Push for Abolishing HOA’s Reverberates Around the State of Florida

In the vibrant political arena of Florida, where property rights and community autonomy are hot-button issues for countless residents, gubernatorial candidate Moe Dimanche is leading the charge against one of the most contentious aspects of suburban life: Homeowners Associations (HOAs). As the first candidate for Governor to explicitly campaign on abolishing HOAs, Moe has ignited a statewide conversation that’s already influencing legislative action.

HOA assessment dues are nothing more than property taxes, but worse because they automatically come with the threat of foreclosure under current Florida law.

-Moe Dimanche, August 8th, 2025

HOAs, intended to maintain neighborhood standards, have often evolved into overreaching entities that impose strict rules on everything from landscaping to holiday displays, while hiking fees and even threatening foreclosures. For many Floridians, these associations symbolize unnecessary bureaucracy and eroded personal freedoms. Moe Dimanche, a first-generation American from Orlando running on a platform of empowering the people and ending corruption, has made abolishing HOAs a cornerstone of his 2026 gubernatorial bid. His campaign pledges to eliminate HOAs alongside reforms like homestead property tax relief, positioning him as a defender of homeowners’ rights.

Moe’s advocacy gained significant traction at the 43rd Annual Pig Roast and Political Mingle, a longstanding fundraiser hosted by the Northeast Polk Chamber of Commerce. The event took place on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lake Eva Event Center in Haines City, drawing hundreds for an evening of barbecue, music, and political discourse. Moe addressed the crowd, promoting his vision to dismantle HOAs and restore control to individual property owners.

“I’ve heard from too many Floridians whose dreams of homeownership are overshadowed by HOA nightmares,” Moe shared with attendees, emphasizing stories of excessive fines and invasive regulations. His remarks rallied the audience, sparking discussions and endorsements on the spot.

GETTING TALLAHASSEE ON BOARD

The impact was swift and profound. Just 13 days later, on August 21st, 2025, State Representative Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) announced he was considering legislation to outright eliminate HOAs across Florida. Porras described them as a “failed experiment” that empowers neighbors to wield undue authority, often leading to abuse and mismanagement after decades of unchecked power. His proposal, floated around August 20-25, includes banning new HOAs and phasing out existing ones, citing the growing backlash from residents fed up with rising fees and authoritarian boards.

While full abolition is still under debate, Porras’s move reflects the surging momentum Moe helped build around abolishing HOAs entirely. Supporters credit Moe’s early and vocal campaign—launched well before Porras’s announcement—as the spark that elevated the issue to Tallahassee’s radar. “Moe was out there first, talking directly to the people at the Pig Roast,” said Robin Welch of Auburndale. “Now, even lawmakers are listening.”

Moe was motivated to abolish HOA’s after investigating an Orlando attorney by the name of Karen Wonsetler, who often claims to represent HOAs in Florida courts. After Moe discovered that Wonsetler was placing illegal liens on homes for thousands of dollars in “attorneys fees” while there wasn’t even litigation in court, and how Wonsetler orchestrated a foreclosure against a vulnerable elderly man in his 90s in Ocoee, he alerted Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation, who launched an investigation into these schemes. There are so many loopholes in Florida’s HOA laws that Wonsetler was able to force residents in Ocoee’s Robert’s Rise community to pay HOA assessment dues to a fake HOA, and to an unlicensed Community Association Manager (CAM). Classic taxation without representation, and Moe believes that the HOA laws are being exploited this way throughout the entire state, and significantly contributing to homelessness among our seniors. This must stop, and Moe is the man to do it.

As the 2026 gubernatorial race intensifies, Moe Dimanche’s anti-HOA stance is resonating with suburban voters from Miami to Orlando. Early indicators show support among those weary of bureaucratic overreach. Under Moe’s leadership, Florida could see a new era where homeowners truly own their slice of the Sunshine State.
